Porsche Macan Turbo

This short term test covers the 2016 Porsche Macan Turbo.   First impressions were high.  The interior quality was outstanding.  Being the Turbo model, it was fitted with alacantra headlining, a full length glass sunroof with sunblind, 21inch wheels and an absolute gem of an engine.

After strapping the two boys into their car seats in the rear, I settled into the driver’s seat.  I’m not sure if it is just me, but I always feel like I’m driving like an old lady as I gingerly exit the dealership.   No body scraps or “loss of traction” on the forecourt please.  These boys are ready to explore this car on the road.


First step is to get through the peak hour traffic which fill my windows and mirrors.  My first thought when entering traffic for the first time was ‘..now that was efficient.”.   My first “actual” thought, prior to editing for print, was “Geeeeeeeez this thing has some go !”

Out on the road, the first button to be engaged was the “noisy button” (as the two boys called it).   It engaged the sports exhaust and created a nice, deep burble – especially on deceleration.

Malachite, my three year old boy, was intoxicated with the noise and the acceleration  –  urging me to “do it again” every time I kicked the 7 speed PDK down a couple of gears.

Time for a quick trip up Mount Tamborine.

It was a weekday.  The roads were fairly busy but the Macan Turbo breezed through the traffic without a hiccup.   Many of the roads up the mountain are 60km/h, which feels like walking pace in this car.  It is, however, easy to stick st the speed limit using cruise control.  I think I might have lost my licence without it.


Mount Tamborine to Byron Bay (the long way)

It took us six hours to get from Tamborine to Byron.   It usually takes us around 90 minutes, but we had some detours and exploration to make.

As a touring car, it is phenomenal.  0-100 in just 4.5 seconds.   Mid range acceleration used for overtaking slow moving cars up steep hill felt even quicker.  No need to plan a run up to overtake, just plant the right foot and the Macan launches forwards.

It was a great help at the Cars and Coffee Byron Bay event as we actually had some space to store our gear.  Banners, camera equipment and prizes are usually crammed into the old 72 workhorse.  But we easily fitted our gear, and four people in the car and enjoyed a very wet morning.   The  quality of the interior came into a great test, as mud found its way into the carpets, door sills and centre console.  Cleaning was a breeze – it all came out easily with just a vacuum.   Here it is parked up next to a wide assortment of interesting cars.



Handing the car back was tough.  The boys had really grown into the car.  They loved the gadgets, such as the auto opening and closing boot, full length sunroof with sun blind, satnav with mapping system which never got us lost and most importantly “the noise”.    What I will take away from the test is the overall build quality, the level of quietness when cruising around town and the amazing power sitting beneath the right foot.

And a parting comment from my wife, who only use a car to get from Point A to Point B “Gee, this is nice.  Where can we go for a drive in it today ?”


So, would I buy one.   It is certainly on my shopping list now when we need to get a new family car.  It has ample room, safety and performance.  What else could you want.
